Icons are powerful little things. In just a few meagre pixels, they can tell your users exactly what the function of an interactive element is, and do it more efficiently than any other image or textual device. Icons provide context in a beautiful way, and help designers use space in a functional and practical sense. They were first used in the 70's as a way to make computer interfaces more usable, and were popularised by the Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating environments, who began to rely heavily on the use of graphic notations in their user interface.

As web designers begin to bridge the gap between the desktop environment and the online phenomenon, icons are finding a more comfortable home in web applications and websites everywhere. These ten icon sets represent a movement towards an acknowledgement of a higher understanding about user interfaces and accessibility, and are ten icon sets that every web designer must have.

Some of these are just what I've been looking for!! You're so right, these are what every web designer needs. Icons become easily one of my main problems when I have to design a site for a client. It's easy as a visitor to a site to forget the effort behind actually using the right sort of icon! They all have their different purposes and have to send exactly the right message, but you know what I mean! Anyway, this is now a brilliant resource for me to use and I just wanted to say a big "THANK YOU" for putting this up! Hopefully other designers out there will find this as helpful as I have (and will).
