HTML 5 is finally becoming a reality, but not without its shortcomings and controversies. HTML 4 has served the web authoring community well during its time, and its successor will bring into view a clear, concise solution to its original problems.

However, what really were the problems with HTML 4? There were plenty of mishaps that made their way into the official specification of HTML 4, thankfully most of which were fixed with the release of XHTML 1, but some still linger in current iterations. The complete lack of extensibility, the still unfinished separation of the layer of presentation, the confusion created by lack of standards for DOM interaction with the document layer; the list goes on unfixed.

Therein lies the rub. What is the solution to all those problems, the core of all the issues with HTML 4? The key, it seems, lies in remembering the true purpose of HTML, the true reason the web even exists today as is. Think a little word called semantics.

Semantics is the practice of finding meaning in an otherwise contextual free piece of information, and the best way to understand the importance of semantics is to look at a simple example.

When you browse a book for a specific piece of text, you know that some portions of that book could contain images, some may be separated paragraphs which contain highlights of the full text, and most will be the information itself. Your brain is able to differentiate this information because it is able to compare these three types of data in a split second, and analyse the differences based on what you see. Often this comparison is made easier by different styling, other times it is insinuated by removal or positing from the main body of text.

Now imagine being read that book aloud by somebody, and then being asked to recall which parts of what you were heard were removed portions of the text, which parts were descriptions of the images in the text, and which parts were the main body of text? Sound pretty difficult, neigh on impossible doesn't it? It is for a computer.

Semantic HTML is the revelation that by adding meaning to the common tags that we use in everyday web authoring, we can introduce a new, more concise way to provide document parsers with a means to truly understand an HTML document. A parser can't read an HTML document without context, just the same way we can't listen to that book being read aloud and completely understand it. By adding meaningful tags, we can allow parsers to fully process and utilise the powerful combination of a well formed document and a set of semantic description data.

So will HTML 5 bring with it the promise of a truly semantic web environment? Well, in a nutshell: no. Where extensibility is needed to truly semantify online documents, HTML 5 invents a collection of new tags to get the job done; at least, that is, until we run into the same wall we're hitting now.

HTML 5 has additional tags such as '<header>', '<nav>', '<article>', '<section>', '<aside>', and '<footer>' that certainly bring the semantic web light years ahead of where we are now. These tags will allow develops to separate documents into sections, and allow parsers to understand the structure of this document without having to parse its presentation; something we're still unable to do simply or even reliably.

However, HTML 5 still manages to miss the point by shoving yet another collection of tags into the arsenal for developers to use. The true way to a semantic HTML language is to allow web authors to extend HTML to use custom tags or attributes that allow semantics to extend past the limited tags that we're now able to use.

There are many solutions that could be used to full semantify the HTML language, but having taken into consideration the lessons learnt by experiments such as the Microformats project, it's pretty obvious that using the current capabilities of HTML, we're not going to get very far without having to start sacrificing features.

One solution that first came to my mind was to work from the same place that Microformats ended; by creating a collection of new attributes for developers to use, we can semantify our documents, without having to rely on a limited set of tags to do so. This idea has been explored brilliantly by the very recent A List Apart article, 'Semantics In HTML 5', written by the ever inspiring John Allsopp.

I can't really say I can pick any holes in this solution as of yet, especially considering that any other solutions will fail to work in older browsers, and will be unstylable by browsers that don't pass unknown tags to the DOM. So instead of ruling out such a brilliant solution, what about simply suggesting a way to implement it?

Since the whole point of this article is to encourage the union of HTML and semantics, I'll avoid suggesting any new, proprietary external solutions, such as the invention of open source semantic documents (think CSS stylesheets, but with semantic information inside, instead of presentational styling); feel free to build a solution on that front though!

So what is the other solution? Well, in XHTML we're presented with the as of yet mostly unexplored idea of namespaces, and the ability to add new collections of tags with definitions as we see fit. This is a feature of XML that was inherited by XHTML, and has incredible power if used correctly. I'm sure you can see where this is heading.

Think about tags like this:

A perfectly valid tag in XHTML using namespaces, and one which presents limitless possibilities to those using a correct doctype, but in HTML it's useless, and not even close to being valid code. Heck, even when targeting XHTML compliant browsers, it's a rickety bridge at best, and it would still ruin older software; Internet Explorer, you dirty browser, I'm looking at you. So how can we combine our two solutions to produce something usable? Well, here's a stab:

With this format of attribute system, the semantic information of an element utilise the same syntax as CSS, which is pretty simple to maintain and use, and saves reinventing the wheel. This particular example highlights one major advantage of this system, which is custom values. Although the date value is one type of semantic data that I have assumed should be specified, the structure of the attribute allows for a custom field titled 'blog-category'. Although this syntax isn't perfect, as the attributes need to be full parsed to determine the semantic important of an element, it's certainly a step forward from HTML 4, and even the current working draft of HTML 5.

So there you have it, a couple of solutions which would bring HTML 5, and the web in general, into a position to become something of a new age toolkit for developers to work with. Far too long have we waited for a solution to the lack of extensibility in HTML, and now that developers are craving for a true solution the poor semantics of the current web, it's a ripe time to implement one.
